Dawson, Lumpkin deputies square off for charity
By CHARLES DUNCAN
There's a border war brewing at The Ford Phillips Center.
On March 28, at 6:30 p.m., the best basketball team in local law enforcement will be crowned.
Deputies from Dawson and Lumpkin counties will suit up to make a difference in the lives of the Chris Sams family.
Proceeds from the event go to the Sams family.
Sams, a former Lumpkin County sheriff's deputy, was killed in a two-car crash last month on Georgia 53 in Dawson County.
Sams, a former Dawson resident, was active in his church, serving as an assistant with youth activities at New Life Church of God in Dawson County.
"It really hits home for me," said Dawson County sheriff's Sgt. Tony Wooten. "My wife is pregnant and Chris' wife was pregnant. Due to injuries she sustained in the accident, she lost their unborn child.
"One moment you're driving down the road with your family and the next moment your life is changed forever," he said. "Life is fleeting and can change in an instant."
The two departments understand that right now is a very difficult time for the Sams' family.
"It's a difficult time both emotionally and financially," Wooten said. "We want to do our part. Chris was a brother in law enforcement and a brother in Christ. We want to do our part to help his family during a very trying time."
Donations are being accepted to help host the charitable event. Businesses wishing to help with concessions food and in other ways can get involved by contacting Wooten at (706) 344-3535.
"To make sure we're doing our part, we're going to raise our own money within the department," Wooten said. "It's a pay-to-play event. We're going to raise our own money in addition to the proceeds from the gate and concessions."
Admission to the event is $5 for adults and $2 for children, Wooten said.
"Dawson County is renowned for its giving ways," Wooten said. "We want to pack that gymnasium and help this family out when it really counts."
